Fox Crossing Police Department

Just before lunch a resident stopped in with a scammer still on his phone! He went on to explain that originally a man from the IRS called to report that he owed over $9,000 in taxes and needed to take care of that or he would be arrested. He was directed to go to the Target store at Fox River Mall and purchase a prepaid debit card and provide the number. Fortunately, a Target employee was wise to this and stopped the man from making the purchase.

With the “IRS” guy still on the phone, the man was told to head to another location to make the purchase. Our resident started to get wise to this scam and instead drove to our police department. Once in the lobby he began to give the man an earful stating he was actually at the police station. The “IRS” guy hung up the phone, however his phone rang again – this time with the Caller ID showing Neenah Police Department. The caller said that he was Officer Andy Gibson and that this man was going to be arrested.

People ask how this can happen and people fall for this, but what these scammers are doing is playing on your emotions, getting you to think with your heart and not your head!

Kudos to the Target employee for diverting the man from making the purchase!

Police Impersonator Sought in Fraud Investigation

In September, a 50 year-old Appleton resident received several phone calls telling her she owed back taxes. These calls signaled the beginning of the “IRS Scam” for the victim.

During the calls, the victim was told the U.S. Treasury Department would be sending someone to her house to take her into custody. A short time later, a man, dressed in a brown uniform, with a “Trooper” style hat, arrived at her house. He was driving a brown, 4-door vehicle, which appeared to be a squad car. Neither the vehicle, nor the man’s uniform, had markings to identify an agency. The man told the victim he had an arrest warrant for her and showed her paperwork. She was given the opportunity to avoid going to jail by paying the alleged back taxes.

The victim was directed to go to several specific stores to purchase money orders and iTunes cards to pay the supposed back taxes. After sending the money orders and activating the iTunes gift cards, the victim realized she had been scammed. She went to the police with her report. In total, she lost over $4,000 dollars to the scammers.

The person who showed up at the victim’s house was described as a male with an olive/darker complexion. He was approximately 200 pounds and appeared fit. The victim believed he was between 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall. He had dark hair and had the name “R. James” on his badge. The victim believes he may have called himself “Robert”.

The Appleton Police Department reminds people to be wary of unsolicited calls. Government agencies, such as the IRS, will send a letter to notify people of issues. They will not call. They also will not demand immediate payment of any back taxes or threaten to have local law enforcement personnel take a person into custody. They certainly will not ask for payment of taxes to be made with money orders or gift cards. If you think you are being scammed, do not provide personal identifying information (date of birth, social security number, credit card or bank information) to the caller.

If you have information regarding this individual, please contact Officer Hayes at the Appleton Police Department’s non-emergency phone number (920) 832-5500. Individuals with information, wishing to remain anonymous, should consider Text-a-Tip. Text CRIMES (274-637) with the keyword APDTIPS at the start of the message.

In observance of the holiday, our office will be closed Monday, July 4th. We will back open at 8am on Tuesday, July 5th! We wish everyone a very happy and safe 4th of July holiday weekend!

Please be aware that this is going on in our area!

WE ARE SEEING AN INCREASE IN THE FREQUENCY OF THE IRS SCAM

Yesterday, we received at least eight (8) calls about the IRS Scam. Unfortunately, another person fell victim to these scammers and lost almost $6,000. Be suspicious of calls from anyone saying they are with the IRS. Also be suspicious of anyone who asks you to pay a tax debt with American Express pre-paid debit cars.

Here is additional information on scams and how to deal with them:

It is almost impossible to keep up with the number of scams occurring on any given day. The people behind the scams now utilize text messaging, emails, phones and the mail. It almost makes you leery of answering the phone, checking your mailbox or opening an e-mail.

A simple search of the word "SCAM" will yield thousands of results. Many of the results you may receive from a search will provide good information on the different scams you may encounter. Start with the sources you can expect accurate information from (FBI, IRS, Federal Trade Commission, Law enforcement agencies).

Keep several things in mind about scams:
1. You don't get something for nothing.
2. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
3. Most people who want your information, don't need it.
4. It won't hurt you to hang up, delete or tear up the source of the scam.
5. If someone threatens you, call your local law enforcement agency. Our number is 920-832-5500.

The Appleton Police Department suggests going the extra step for any transaction where someone is requesting you to send money or provide personal identifying information (full name, date of birth, drivers license number or social security number). Face to face transactions are preferable.

Lastly, share this with people you know who may be ill, elderly or short of money. The people operating scams seem to have a knack for finding those individuals.

Be smart. Be safe!
