This year, we opened the doors on a second early learning center on Buffalo’s East Side. Science tells us that the most critical time for development occurs during the early years, laying the foundation for success in school, relationships and future work. If a community is going to prosper, its youngest children need access to quality learning environments.

In honor of American Heart Month, we’re sharing the story of a heart health advocate from our M&T family. Read about Dan’s personal connection to heart disease and why he works to make a difference in his community.
“I’ve seen firsthand how someone can take great care of themself, but still can be a candidate for heart issues. That’s exactly what my father and my childhood best friend thought. In an instant their lives (and ours) changed forever. Sadly, we lost my father in 2007 to the disease but doctors at Children’s Hospital of Buffalo performed magic and kept my best friend alive. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the U.S. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease. The good news is it can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. That’s why I’m co-chairing the 2019 Rochester Heart Walk & Run and encouraging everyone in my life (family, friends, colleagues, etc.) and the greater community to “heartwalk” with me this Spring. Together, we can make healthier, longer lives possible.”
- Dan Burns, M&T Regional President
