[02/04/21]   Taxpayers with ITINs are Now Eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC)

Under the earlier CARES Act, joint returns of couples where only one member of the couple had a Social Security Number were generally ineligible for a payment - unless they were a member of the military. But the recent new law changes and expands that provision, and more people are now eligible.
In this scenario, these families will now be eligible to receive payments for the taxpayers and qualifying children of the family who have work-eligible SSNs. People in this group who didn't receive an Economic Impact Payment can claim this (for EIP#1 and EIP#2) when they file their 2020 taxes on the Recovery Rebate Credit line of the return.

The SSN Needs to be Valid for Employment

Taxpayers need a valid SSN to be eligible for stimulus money. A valid SSN doesn't include those that have "Not valid for employment" indicated on their Social Security cards.
Taxpayer That Had an ITIN for All of 2020 Can Still Get the Recovery Rebate Credit

Taxpayers may be eligible for the Rebate Recovery Credit even if they had an ITIN for all of 2020, and later attain a valid SSN. A valid SSN needs to be issued before the due date of the return (including extensions).

[01/05/21]   When Do I Need To Complete the TY2020 Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet?

The Recovery Rebate Credit is authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Any eligible individual who did not receive any and/or the full amount of the recovery rebate as an advance payment, also known as an Economic Impact Payment, can claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on a 2020 Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR.
These forms can also be used by people who are not normally required to file tax returns but are eligible for the credit.

Generally, this credit will increase the amount of a taxpayer's refund or lower the amount of tax owed (any over-payments do not impact the refund calculation and do not have to paid back).

[01/05/21]   Is the Official Start Date for TY2020 e-Filing Monday, January 25?

As of Monday, Jan 4 - the IRS has not yet officially announced the e-File start date. The earlier expectation was that e-Filing might go live Monday, January, 25. There is also no official confirmation that implementing the recently passed Pandemic Relief Bill provisions will delay the start of the 2021 tax season. Last season, the IRS announced the official start date on January 6 and so we can reasonably expect an announcement later this week.

[12/30/20]   Here are some new key things people should consider when filing their 2020 tax return.

Recovery rebate credit
Taxpayers may be able to claim the recovery rebate credit if they met the eligibility requirements in 2020 and one of the following applies to them:
• They didn't receive an Economic Impact Payment in 2020.
• They are single and their payment was less than $1,200.
• They are married, filed jointly for 2018 or 2019 and their payment was less than $2,400.
• They didn't receive $500 for each qualifying child.

Refund interest payment
People who received a federal tax refund in 2020 may have been paid interest. The IRS sent interest payments to individual taxpayers who timely filed their 2019 federal income tax returns and received refunds. Most interest payments were received separately from tax refunds. Interest payments are taxable and must be reported on 2020 federal income tax returns. In January 2021, the IRS will send a Form 1099-INT, Interest Income, to anyone who received interest of at least $10.

[12/10/20]   IRS warns people about a COVID-related text message scam

The IRS and its Security Summit partners are warning people to be aware of a new text message scam. The thief’s goal is to trick people into revealing bank account information under the guise of receiving the $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.

Here’s how this scam works
People get a text message saying they have “received a direct deposit of $1,200 from COVID-19 TREAS FUND. Further action is required to accept this payment… Continue here to accept this payment …" The text includes a link to a phishing web address.

This fake link appears to come from a state agency or relief organization. It takes people to a fake website that looks like the Get My Payment website. If people visit the fake website and enter their personal and financial account information, the scammers collect it.

Here’s what people should do if they receive this message
Anyone who receives this scam text should take a screenshot and include the screenshot in an email to [email protected] with the following information:

Date/time/time zone that they received the text message
The phone number that received the text message
The IRS doesn’t send unsolicited texts or emails. The agency will never demand immediate payment using a gift card, prepaid debit card or wire transfer or threaten to have a taxpayer arrested.

[12/09/20]   Identity Protection PIN Program will soon be available to taxpayers nationwide
In January, the IRS Identity Protection PIN Opt-In Program will be expanded to all taxpayers who can properly verify their identity.
An identity pretention PIN is a six-digit number assigned to eligible taxpayers to help prevent their Social Security number from being used to file fraudulent federal income tax returns. This number helps the IRS verify a taxpayer’s identity and accept their tax return. The online Get An IP PIN tool immediately displays the taxpayer’s assigned number.
This tool uses Secure Access authentication verify a person’s identity. Taxpayers should review the Secure Access requirements before they try to use the Get An IP PIN tool.
Other ways to get an IP PIN
There are other ways to get an IP PIN if someone is unable to pass the Secure Access authentication. Taxpayers with income of $72,000 or less should complete Form 15227 and mail or fax it to the IRS. An IRS employee will call the taxpayer to verify their identity using a series of questions. Those who pass authentication will receive an IP PIN the following tax year.
Taxpayers who cannot verify their identities remotely or who are ineligible to file Form 15277 should make an appointment, visit a Taxpayer Assistance Center and bring two forms of picture identification. This is an in-person identity verification. After the taxpayer passes authentication, an IP PIN will be mailed to them within three weeks.
Taxpayers should never share their IP PIN with anyone but their tax provider. The IRS will never call to request the taxpayer’s IP PIN, and taxpayers must be alert to potential IP PIN scams.
