For those in the Houston area, I hope you and your families are safe and dry. The road ahead is going to be difficult but it has been amazing to see how our city has come together to help each other out. Also, thank you to everyone outside of Houston who has been supportive and done so much to help us during our time of need.
I've been getting a lot of calls and messages regarding Insurance Coverage and claims so I thought I'd post some general info that may be of use during this confusing time. If you have a specific question, feel free to contact me or your agent directly.
1) If you have full coverage Auto Insurance and your car was flooded, you have nothing to worry about and will be able to file a claim.
2) For homeowners, if any damage was caused by Hurricane Harvey's (and related) winds or "wind driven rain," you will also have coverage and be able to file a claim. Just keep in mind that your deductible will likely be 2% of the dwelling coverage on your policy, although some people still have 1% deductibles (not so common anymore in this area).
3) The bigger question has been about damage to your homes caused by flooding. If you did not purchase a separate Flood Insurance policy, you will NOT have coverage. Unfortunately, this seems to be the case for most of the folks that are experiencing flooding in their homes. There *may* be federal assistance available for some, but it is not clear right now how to qualify or how it will work.
4) Similar rules apply to business owners as 2 and 3 above.
5) If you have sustained damage, it is your responsibility to act to prevent further damage if possible AND you can do so safely. SAFELY being the key word in that sentence. Take lots of photos and keep notes regarding the damage (or make a video) and keep receipts for any money spent on repairs.
6) Water damage can cause long term problems, especially with mold. Be proactive and do what needs to be done to dry out your home...and not only what's visible.
7) Due to the number of claims all Insurance companies will see, you have to be patient and expect to have to wait for an adjuster to come out and then again wait for the Insurance company to process your claim. This process will be a marathon, not a sprint. In the meantime, do what you need to do and as stated before keep receipts and take pictures.
8)) There are a lot of scammers who show up after catastrophes, especially contractors. Just be vigilant and only do business with legitimate companies. Do your research and only pay for work on a milestone basis after the work is done.
9) Feel free to contact the claims department of your Insurance Company directly if your agent's office is busy. It will SPEED UP the process and your agent will still be able to give you pointers. It makes the process faster for everyone, just keep your agent in the loop.

Also a huge thank you to our police and fire departments who will be taxed and maxed to their limits in the ensuing days, and the numerous doctors and health care workers who will be away from their families during this natural disaster, in order to provide medical services to those who will need them.

Texas is HOT this summer and we've seen too many dogs outside and absolutely miserable! Keep your pup cool this summer with some popsicles safe for dogs!!!
1 cup peanut butter, preferably unsalted and unsweetened (Make sure it doesn't have xylitol, which is toxic for dogs)
Half a ripe banana, mashed
Water as needed
In a small mixing bowl, combine peanut butter with a little water or half a mashed banana. (The water and banana aren't essential, but they help with freezing consistency.)
Line a cookie sheet with wax paper, or use Kong-style rubber toys that have a cavity you can fill. Freeze and enjoy!
May the 4th be with you! 😉💙🐶
