New Special Enrollment Period from Feb. 15 through May 15
In response to the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, on Jan. 28 the Biden-Harris Administration announced a special enrollment period (SEP) from Feb. 15 through May 15. This new enrollment window allows individuals and families to apply for Marketplace (on-exchange) coverage.
• Anyone who is eligible for a Marketplace plan can apply for this SEP, including those who have existing ACA coverage.
• The effective date of coverage for this SEP will be the first day of the month following plan selection.
• Our BCBSTX on-exchange plans will be available on HealthCare.gov for this SEP.
• We’re evaluating options to make this SEP available off exchange and will provide additional information as it’s available.
Medicare Myth: You Can Enroll in Medicare Whenever You Want. False! You can enroll in Medicare if you meet certain qualifications and for a specific amount of time. There are rules for each of these enrollment periods, and if you fail to adhere to them, you could end up paying financial penalties. Most people qualify for Medicare when they are about to turn 65, but you can also become eligible via qualified disabilities and medical conditions. For age and disability, you will have a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period.

A Health Insurance POS (Point of Service Plan) is a type of plan in which you pay less if you use doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers that belong to the plan’s network. POS plans also require you to get a referral from your primary care doctor in order to see a specialist.
Medicare doesn’t cover everything. Some of the coverage gaps are particularly relevant to an aging population, such as hearing aids, podiatry, dental and vision care, and nursing home care In order to increase coverage for additional heathcare needs, some people choose to participate in a Medicare Advantage plan instead of traditional Medicare.
Medigap, also called Medicare supplement insurance, provided supplemental coverage to nearly 3 in 10 (29%) beneficiaries in traditional Medicare in 2019. These policies are sold by private insurance companies and fully or partially cover Part A and Part B cost-sharing requirements, including deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.
End of the year tax tips: Max out your HSA: Another method for lowering your taxable income is to contribute the maximum allowed to a Health Savings Account, which is generally $3,550 for individuals or $7,100 for families; an additional $1,000 catch-up contribution is allowed if age 55 or older. HSA contributions can be deducted through payroll, or direct contributions can be made to ensure the maximum is met.
With Health Insurance what is the “Lifetime Limit” in a plan? A cap on the total lifetime benefits you may get from your insurance company. An insurance company may impose a total lifetime dollar limit on benefits (like a $1 million lifetime cap) or limits on specific benefits (like a $200,000 lifetime cap on organ transplants or one gastric bypass per lifetime) or a combination of the two. After a lifetime limit is reached, the insurance plan will no longer pay for covered services.
A typical Individual Disability Income Protection plan starts to pay benefits after you have been off work for 1 to 6 months, and pays benefits for several years or until retirement age, depending on the policy.
Understanding an HSA: A type of savings account that lets you set aside money on a pre-tax basis to pay for qualified medical expenses. By using untaxed dollars in a Health Savings Account (HSA) to pay for deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and some other expenses, you may be able to lower your overall health care costs. HSA funds generally may not be used to pay premiums.
During the Medicare open enrollment period, you can: Switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage (as long as you’re enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B, and you live in the Medicare Advantage plan’s service area).
Medicare’s general enrollment period is for people who didn’t sign up for Medicare Part B when they were first eligible, and who don’t have access to a Medicare Part B special enrollment period. It’s also for people who have to pay a premium for Medicare Part A and didn’t enroll in Part A when they were first eligible.
Income Protection 101: A typical Individual Disability Income Protection plan starts to pay benefits after you have been off work for 1 to 6 months, and pays benefits for several years or until retirement age, depending on the policy.

These caps are sometimes placed on particular services such as prescriptions or hospitalizations.
