Traditionally, April 15 is the tax filing deadline for income tax. This year’s tax deadline was extended to May 17 at a federal level. In Texas, affected individuals and businesses get until June 15 to file their 2020 taxes.

This deadline extension is automatic so you don’t need to apply for it. But if you want to extend your deadline even more, you will need to apply for an extension using form 4868 which will give you until October 18 to file your taxes.

Even if you apply for the further extension, you still need to estimate and pay due taxes by the original deadline (this year being May 17 or June 15 in some cases in Texas) to avoid penalties.

If the process of filing your 2020 taxes looks daunting, it is not too late to get a tax preparer involved and file as soon as possible. At Argo, we’re experienced tax preparers so we can make it easy for you!

It’s a fact: if you use any type of four-wheeled motor vehicle for your business, and if the vehicle operates on public roads, you are legally required to get commercial auto insurance. But what does it cover? Here it is, in a nutshell:

Types of vehicles: cars, box trucks, food trucks, work vans, service utility trucks, school busses, etc.

Legally required coverage: bodily injury liability and property damage liability, combined in a liability policy. It pays for bodily injury, death and damage to the other driver’s car if the accident was your (or your driver’s) fault

Additional coverage - medical payments, no-fault or personal injury coverage. It pays for your and your passenger’s medical expenses in case of an accident, regardless of fault.

Additional coverage - collision coverage. It pays for damage to your vehicle when it hits or is hit by another object.

Additional coverage - comprehensive physical damage coverage. It pays for damage to your vehicle from theft, fire, flood, vandalism and other covered perils.

Additional coverage – uninsured/underinsured motorist. It pays for your medical bills and sometimes damaged property in case your vehicle gets hit by an uninsured, underinsured or hit-and-run driver.

Every business is different so your commercial auto insurance needs will be specific to your type of business. To get the best coverage for your situation and budget, your best bet will be to work with an independent insurance agency (like us).

Money tip of the week: help achieve your financial goals by starting a no-buy year. Here’s how to do it right:

Set a goal. Know exactly why you are doing it. Is it to pay off debt? Is it to save up for a down payment for a car or house? Is it to fund your wedding or the arrival of a new baby or a trip around the world? A goal will help keep you on track and focused when times get rough.

Define your approved spending. These are your essential items: food, transportation, communication, consumable goods, replacement items, experiences (museums, courses).

Define your no-buys. Typically, all non-essential spending is cut off. Think restaurants & take-out, clothes, make-up, décor, books, gifts. If you absolutely cannot live without some of them, dedicate a tiny amount in your approved spending. Like one dinner out a month.

Have your partner on board. The limitations are easier to bear if you are both on the same page. It will make meal prepping and finding free entertainment alternatives much easier.

Start with a “no-buy month” trial. If the idea of a whole year is overwhelming, commit to one month first and get to experience that rewarding feeling. Then do it again next month, and next month. You’ll get to month 12 in no-time.

Although in Texas it is not required in most cases, workers’ compensation insurance is something you should definitely consider getting even if you only have one employee. It can save your business thousands to tens of thousands of dollars in the long run. Here’s what it covers:

Medical expenses (examinations, treatments, rehabilitation) if your employee is victim of a work related accident or illness.

Lost wages that your employee would have earned if he/she had been working, during the time he/she is incapacitated by a work related accident or illness.

Burial costs if your employee dies because of a work related accident or illness.

Death benefits that would help your employee’s family if your employee dies because of a work related accident or illness.

Getting your finances in check may be an intimidating task and you might not know where to begin. It’s easier if you start with small steps. Here are 5 small habits that will make a great impact on your financial situation:

Keep an eye on tiny purchases. A take-out coffee here, a vending machine bag of chips there, can pass unnoticed but will quickly add up. A couple of treats a week are fine, but don’t make it an everyday habit.

Transfer a portion of each paycheck in a separate bank account – an account you have with a different bank altogether. By not seeing the money available in the account you currently use, you’ll keep it away from temptations.

Quit smoking ci******es. This will save you between $5.36 and $10 a day, depending on your state, if you were smoking a pack every day.

Unsubscribe from sales newsletters. You don’t need new makeup every week, even if there’s a special offer.

Set aside $50 a month for gifts. Christmas gifts, birthday gifts, anniversary gifts, Valentine’s Day gifts can make a dent in your funds if you’re not prepared.

Homeowners insurance premiums can be a drain on your annual budget but here are 5 tips to lower this cost:

Raise your deductible. The higher the deductible, the more you will save in premiums. Typically deductibles start from $500 but if you raise that to $1000 you may be able to save up to 25% on premiums.

Buy your home and auto insurance from the same carrier. This could lower your home insurance premiums by 5-15%

Invest in home security. Some companies will give you discounts of up to 15-20% on your home insurance premiums if you have a sprinkler system and a fire and burglar alarm that alerts the police or fire department.

Maintain a good credit history. Your credit record will be taken into consideration when establishing your home insurance premiums, so make sure you pay all your bills and loans on time.

Shop around. Compare rates from as many companies as possible. Have an independent insurance agency look for the best rates for you. We can help with this one!

Commercial general liability insurance sounds like a complex thing but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s what it covers, in simple terms:

A client’s medical bills if he/she falls on a slippery floor in your office or store.

Repair costs to fix a wall that one of your employees damaged at a client’s house.

Repair costs to fix your rented office if it’s affected by fire, lightning or explosion.

Legal costs to defend your business if it gets sued.

Any business, large or small, needs commercial general liability insurance. As an independent insurance agency, we can help you get the best coverage for your business at the best rates!

We originally wanted to play a prank on our followers saying that we invented FREE CAR INSURANCE but we all know that that doesn’t exist. Why don’t you tell us a memorable prank that someone did play on you instead?

03/31/2021

Want to lower your car insurance cost? Here are a few useful tips:

Maintain a good credit score. Most insurers use credit information to price car insurance policies.

Buy your homeowners and auto insurance from the same carrier. Many insurers will give you a discount if you buy two or more types of insurance.

Maintain a clean driving record. Having no accidents and no moving violations in the last 3 years will help you get cheaper car insurance.

If you’re a student driver, get good grades. Some insurers will give discounts to well-performing students.

Consider a cheaper but reliable car. The more a car costs, the more it will cost to insure it.

Shop around and compare rates. Have an independent insurance agent (like us!) do the shopping for you. They will have access to rates from most insurers and, by not being tied to any of them, can offer you the best price to fit your need.

What if I didn't file my taxes.mp4

This year’s tax deadline was extended to May 17 at a federal level. In Texas, affected individuals and businesses get until June 15 to file their 2020 taxes.

But what happens if you don’t file at all? Well, first off, not filing your taxes is not a good idea. Here’s why:

You will be subject to penalties and interest to the IRS. Your interest starts off at 0.5% of the tax owed for each month, and your late filing penalty starts at 5% of tax owed for each month.

If you’re self-employed, you won’t get credits for your Social Security retirement or disability benefits.

The IRS will file a substitute return for you. This will not include any exemptions you may be entitled to and you will end up owing more taxes than you should.

After filing the substitute return, the IRS will start collecting the tax by several means, such as placing a levy on your wages or bank account or filing a federal tax lien against your property.

If the process of filing your 2020 taxes looks daunting, it is not too late to get a tax preparer involved and file as soon as possible. At Argo, we’re experienced tax preparers so we can make it easy for you!

If you have business equipment (computers, cameras, tools) or furniture – you need commercial property insurance

If you have employees – you need workers’ compensation insurance

If you have a company car – you need commercial auto insurance

Depending on the type of business you have, you will need a combination of the above types of coverage. Sounds confusing already? As an independent insurance agency, we can help you get the best coverage for your business at the best rates!

Money tip of the day: create a zero-based budget, where every dollar has a name to it and there’s no money left un-allocated at the end of the month. It will help you reach your financial goals faster! Here’s how:

Write down your monthly income. Include your salary and any additional income (side hustles, child support, passive income etc).

Write down your monthly expenses. Start with the essentials (housing, food, transportation, phone) and go in decreasing order of importance. Allocate an amount for unexpected expenses. Allocate an amount for savings.

Write down your seasonal expenses. Include holidays, birthday gifts, taxes, insurance premiums. Divide the total by 12 to know how much you should allocate for these each month.

Subtract your expenses from your income to equal zero. If you get a negative number, decrease your expenses. If you get a surplus of income, allocate it to savings or debt repayment.

Track all spending during the month. This way you’ll know if you can stick to the plan realistically or if you need to make more money.

Days of our lives.

03/22/2021

Never a boring day in Texas! With warm weather comes the realization that we’re just two months away from hurricane season. Here’s what you need to do to prepare:

Get flood insurance. You may need it even if you don’t live in a flood plain. Floods can happen anywhere after a major storm. Keep in mind, your flood policy will take 30 days to become active.

Write a home inventory. Take pictures and videos of every room in your house, including closets and drawers. Write down the price, serial number, and date of purchase of big items.

Add your insurance agent to your phone contacts. He/she is one of the first people you will call, should disaster strike.

Get your house ready. Check and fix the roof, get storm shutters for your windows and a wind-resistant garage door. Remove dead tree limbs and branches that hang over your house.

Consider comprehensive auto insurance. It will cover damage to your car from flood, hail, wind, or fire.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Today, Irish people all over the world, including about 32 million fellow Irish-Americans, celebrate their patron saint!

St. Patrick lived in the 5th century, is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland, and March 17 is the supposed date of his death.

Parades and events are very common on this day but remember, we’re living unusual times. So, if you’re going to attend a little something-something, wear a mask and practice social distancing. Or better yet, attend a virtual event!
