Real Estate Matters with Stewart Title #309

Many of us are familiar with setting SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely – especially at the beginning of a new year.

Featured in this week’s insurance segment on Real Estate Matters radio show, we repurpose the same SMART acronym to remember some ways to mitigate risk, especially when it comes to today’s hot topic: cyber-crime.

S = Set procedures. Processes on how you communicate with clients, how you share and confirm information, how you store important data, all help protect your company, associates and clients.

M = Make it mandatory. Make your business procedures mandatory. Not suggested or recommended, but, mandatory.

A = Area of expertise. Focus your services within your area of expertise. Advise clients on what you know and introduce other professionals to advise where needed. (For instance – insurance!)

R = Record. Have a process to record your interactions within each real estate transaction, including your client conversations and important decisions that were made.

T = Telephone. Use the telephone to verify important information (if meeting in person is not possible) and advise your clients to do the same! Never use the phone number listed in a questionable email.

AND THE BEAT GOES ON: An Economic Outlook On What Changes, What Stays The Same And What’s To Come

Dr. Ted C. Jones, Chief Economist for Stewart, has officially kicked off his annual Economic Outlook tour. We had the privilege of sponsoring one of his presentations here in Houston.

As always, these presentations never fail to be tremendously informative and equally entertaining. Realtors and Brokers - if you missed this one, he may be traveling to your city soon! Comment below your location for an invite to next one near you.

If you are in this ever-changing industry of #realestate, you know the importance of adapting and staying current.

Just as we shared with the Houston Independent Real Estate Brokers Association, your insurance and risk management strategy should be adapting as quickly as you do:

• There are basic risk management practices to uphold such as establishing procedures, documenting, advising only within your area of expertise, and being cautious with your recommendations.

• With frequent new developments in the industry, your business practices should also evolve on a regular basis to address current threats.

• We are entering a new era of cyber-crime and fraudsters are looking to steal data and funds.

• One new step you should consider implementing NOW is having your buying and selling clients read and sign a Real Estate Transaction Acknowledgement Form that outlines the details of how funds will be handled for that transaction.

• Want one of these templates to use? Leave us a comment below or message us 😊

How do you know if your business insurance addresses today’s risks? Unless you take the time to build a plan, you won't know. Follow these 3 steps and connect with our team to be confident in your insurance coverage.

Steps to Recovery After a Disaster

Our very own President of Stewart Insurance and Risk Management, Tom Carpentier, shares the steps to take with your insurance company after a disaster. Hurricane Harvey left behind a great deal of damage, but also revealed the strong ties of the Houston community. It is important to continue to stand strong on this long road to recovery. #HoustonStrong After disaster strikes, many turn to their insurance policies to start the road back to recovery. Refer to these steps when preparing to file a claim with your insurance companies.

In honor of Senior Citizen’s Day, part of our team volunteered at Autumn Leaves of Riverstone, an Assisted Living Memory Care Facility. Some of our activities included decorating cookies, coloring and making collages. It was a joy spending time with the seniors and making a positive difference. The Importance of Proper Insurance

As an insurance broker, we work with a variety of insurance companies to select the right coverage.
As a company owned by Stewart Title, we focus our insurance services in real estate.
Finally, as a team who believes in making a positive difference, we set out each day to properly insure people, better.

Learning everyday is crucial in any industry- especially for service professionals. We grow by asking, "How can I improve? How can I differentiate?" Consider each step within a real estate transaction. We all have the opportunity to provide guidance to make that real estate transaction a better experience for the customer. Our continuing education classes are intended to help real estate agents know enough to inform and then refer to an industry professional thereafter.

Today is commonly known as #InsuranceAwarenessDay, but we offer a slight adjustment: #ProperInsuranceAwarenessDay. We don't often think of it, but proper insurance should be there for us when it matters most. Take the time now to dive into the details with a knowledgeable agent; proper insurance is different for everyone and depends on YOUR needs.

We care too much let our customers go without proper insurance! Contact us to learn more about being properly insured 🙂

The 101st Annual TMBA Convention has concluded and we have learned many things. Here are some key takeaways for creating and being a part of a winning team:

- Winning teams have a common, overarching purpose that drives long term strategy as well as daily decisions.

- Don't lose sight of the people you're serving (versus the number quotes you're providing, houses you're selling or dollars you're earning).

- High performance teams have leaders that expand their employees' horizons by instilling faith in their abilities and providing continuous coaching.

- Technology will continue to interrupt the industry. Work on small advancements at a time to meet your customers where they want to do business.

- Whatever industry you reside, get involved with your trade organization. You'll connect with the community and other amazing people!

ALTA Urges CFPB to Warn Consumers About Wire Fraud Schemes

As a real estate professional, be aware of risks that can affect you and your customers. Bottom line: Keep the lines of communication open and take the extra step to verify important information before taking action. ALTA has educated its members over the past few years about these wire fraud schemes, but the best defe...
