During a medicare review yesterday, Ms. Ma'am said, "I don't like XYZ insurance. My sister has XYZ and we tried to get them to pay for her to have a home health aide and they wouldn't. We just wanted to someone to check in on her and maybe sit with her for a few hours a day." I hear this concern frequently. However, this type of care is what medicare considers non-medical custodial care; also termed long-term care. Medicare doesn't cover long-term care, if that's the only care needed. What is custodial care? • Medicare defines custodial care as non-skilled personal care, like help with activities of daily living like bathing, dressing, eating, getting in or out of a bed or chair, moving around, and using the bathroom. It may also include the kind of health-related care that most people do themselves, like using eye drops. In most cases, Medicare doesn't pay for custodial care. What is long-term care? • long-term care is a range of services and support for your personal care needs. Most long-term care isn't medicare care. Instead, most long-term care is help with basic personal tasks of everyday life, sometimes called activities of daily living. More information can found on www.medicare.gov; link is below.

GE predicts savings of $1 billion on retiree benefit this year

More fallout -

"The savings were achieved at the same time the company cut off traditional healthcare plans for retired employees, sending them to a private exchange with a $1,000-a-year subsidy."

GE's filing didn't specify how much of the savings were from the healthcare plan changes, and the company declined to provide further detail.
