IMPORTANT UPDATE: The Coronavirus

This week we have experienced major market plunges as fears around the coronavirus [COVID-19] were reignited with the news that the virus had spread to additional countries and is on track to impact many major economies. We know that these events may have sparked questions regarding your investments. Volatility is the nature of the game regarding investing in the stock market, and anytime there are major current events that could impact our economy, investors can be more likely to expect some level of volatility to ensue.

Yes, it is the worst week for stocks since 2008. You will likely see that headline get thrown around a lot this week and going into the weekend. However, 2008 was a structural change in the US economy that affected our entire banking and housing sector, as well as the individual consumer. This is a temporary economic halt due to a virus. Markets are worried about the slower economic growth in Q1 because China, Japan, and now Italy have essentially shut down parts of their economy to counteract the spread of the virus. This is very different than a housing crisis or a dot com bubble. Those economies should resume normal activity once the virus is contained and under control. The major uncertainty surrounding that is just how long it will take.

In all likelihood, history will show that now is precisely the wrong time to sell. On average, the stock market experiences losses of 5% or more 1.5 times per year and experiences a 10% loss once every two years. As of February 26, 2020, the S&P 500 still has a positive one-year return of 11.6%.

In 2018, poor market timing caused the average investor to lose 9.42% during the year, while the S&P 500 lost 4.38%. This means that the average investor lost twice as much as the markets due to poor decision making. During August 2018, markets were actually up 3.26%, but the average investor only returned 1.8% due to poor behavior. This happens consistently across history; no one can time markets consistently and poor behavior is a leading cause of poor investor returns.

At Blue Ridge Wealth, we know that market activity like this can be concerning. But we also know that market timing does more harm than good and that’s why we encourage a plan that’s tailored to your individual goals and risk tolerance. Your Plan for Everything was built to account for bouts of volatility such as this.

The good news about all of this is that we are just a phone call away to answer any questions you may have. Our office number is 865-392-4260 and we would be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Thank you,

BRW
