Mental Toughness—DEFINED

My favorite definition of Mental Toughness, the mind’s ability to focus on solutions—especially in the face of adversity. These days, we are definitely experiencing adversity. Here are two steps to help work on your mental toughness.

1. Have Perspective: This past week I have had many conversations with friends trying to gain insight on their perspective of what is happening in the world. There are three highlights I want to comment on;
· Clint Diedrich gave me an analogy that really made sense, he said, “Instead of our Country moving at 60 miles per hour like we normally do we are now moving at 15 to 20 miles per hour”. It’s important to remember, the world isn’t stopping it is merely slowing down for a little while.
· Shep Hyken reminded me that similar to other difficult times our country has experienced “this too shall pass”.
· John O’Leary on a podcast with Shawn Achor highlighted the importance of reminding oneself of good times and remembering to be grateful for those things we do have rather than allowing our minds to only focus on those things we may be going without. Shawn challenged John and his family to write down three things each family member was grateful for daily for 21 days and put them in a bowl to look at sometime later in life.

Remember to have perspective. Life isn’t ending it is merely slowing down, THIS IS NOT A LIFE SENTENCE, THIS TOO SHALL PASS. In tough times, remind yourself of the good times and all those things you do have to help keep a more accurate perception of reality. Take a moment now and remind yourself of a great memory from the past few months. If necessary, pull out some old photos to help remind you, allow yourself to reminisce for a few minutes. Maybe even call an old friend to share a laugh.

2. Fill Your Bucket: This is a concept I learned many years ago in a book called “How Full is Your Bucket”. Author Tom Rath explained that best way to fill your own bucket is to fill someone else’s. In times like this it becomes quite easy to focus on oneself and getting as much as you can for yourself. Unfortunately doing so actually drains one’s bucket psychologically. If you want respect, find a way to give respect. If you need more love go out of your way to love more. If you need something, find a way to give it and psychologically you will be rewarded. You will fill your bucket and develop mental toughness along the way.

Keep Developing Your Mental Toughness...NO EXCUSE!

It requires hard work and dedication to develop mental toughness and it takes constant effort to keep our minds focusing on solutions to our daily problems. Learning to thrive when adversity strikes is my definition of mental toughness- and that has definitely been tested these past couple weeks with the market. It is our choice to focus on the negative and how this will affect our lives, or to put our focus on the positive and what we can do to make our situation better. To develop your mental toughness I want you to pick one thing…and yes I mean only one thing to improve.

Here are some options:

· ATTACK WHAT YOU FEAR: Find one thing you know you need to do but have been putting off and GET IT DONE. Remember, making yourself uncomfortable speeds up the process of developing mental toughness.

· MENTALLY PREPARE: Take a few minutes and complete your mental workout before your day begins. Be certain to “use” the mental workout to emphasize in the visualization of your upcoming day nailing your biggest win.

· RECOGNIZE DONE WELLS: Write down on paper 3 things you have done well in the previous 24 hours. That which you focus on expands. Giving yourself credit for even little things done well increases confidence and makes it more likely you will do more things well tomorrow.

· ADD 10 PERCENT: Do 10 percent more of your most important daily activity. For example if 30 minutes cardio is your most important thing, do 33 minutes. If its 10 outbound sales calls, do 11 that day.


EXTRA CREDIT: For added benefit, teach one person what your one thing is each week. Teaching increases learning retention and accountability.

Talking to Yourself the Right Way: Performance Statements and Identity Statements

On a daily basis, most people are talking to themselves in a negative manner. You make a mistake at work, say the wrong thing to your child or oversleep, and then, for a few seconds you mentally abuse yourself with statements like, “I am a total screw up,” or “I am never going to get this right.” Although it’s completely normal, it’s unacceptable. Those negative statements completely erode confidence and mental toughness.
This week the mental toughness challenge is to listen to how you speak to yourself and to work on not saying negative things, even if you think you deserve it. Remember, that which you focus on expands. Saying negative things about yourself will only increase the likelihood of more negative performances.
There are 3 self-talk techniques I want you to use to eliminate negative self-talk. Any time you catch yourself going negative on something, choose to replace the negative self talk with one of the following:

1. Improving Statements: If there is something you are not doing well, instead of reinforcing it by focusing on the negative, reframe to something you are improving. For example, after oversleeping, instead of saying, “I am not a morning person,” you could say, “I am working on becoming a morning person.”
2. Performance Statements: The whole idea behind the performance statement is to identify the most important things you need to do that cause you to perform well. Some performance statements examples are listed below:
• Track the ball, short swing, finish (baseball-hitting)
• Read the D, quick feet, follow through (football quarterback)
• Head down, controlled tempo, finish out (golf-full swing)
• Control and complete (soccer)
• Breath, control the pace, attack the emphasis (professional speaker)
• Ask, listen, provide a solution (sales)
• Be patient, be loving, be strong (parenting)
3. Identity Statements: An Identity statement is essentially a personal mantra. If you don’t already have one, take a moment right now to create one. Below are some examples of identity statements:
• I am more physically and mentally prepared than my competition. I am a dominant major league hitter.
• I outwork the competition. I am a Super bowl winning quarterback.
• I have more ability than my competition. I am a confident and consistent collegiate soccer player.
• I am blessed with ability, and I am fully committed. I am a confident professional speaker.
• I am confident and prepared. No one cares about their clients more than I do. I am a 2 million dollar producer.
• I am loving, patient, and strong. I love my children and my life. I create and deserve success.

Remember self-confidence is the number 1 variable for influencing performance. A great way to boost our self-confidence is to continually talk to ourselves with a positive voice.
The real benefit will come when the pressure is on. Instead of not knowing what to think or having negative thoughts, it will be easier for your mind to stay focused on thoughts that help you perform.
A very dear friend of mine said something to me a few years back that has personally helped me a great deal. He said, “Be gentle on yourself.” One of the hardest things to do as an adult is to learn how to be gentle with ourselves. This is not a free pass to screw up or not be accountable. In fact, it’s just the opposite. Learn to talk about yourself in a more focused and positive manner, and you will improve and succeed more quickly.

Highly successful people are accountable, THEY DON’T MAKE EXCUSES, THEY OWN THEIR MISTAKES. The human mind can only fully focus on one thing at a time, and when a person makes excuses, he cannot and will not be accountable for his mistakes. When a mistake is made, you can either focus on the excuse (reason for the mistake) or the mistake itself (the pain the mistake causes you). You cannot focus on both---YOU CHOOSE.
