As much as I love this season, it’s an important one to prepare for as a homeowner. Thought I’d share a few ways I recommend preparing to help avoid costly property damage, among other things. Hope this helps - feel free to reach out with any questions.
Examine exterior pipes. Make sure outdoor faucets and pipes are insulated, caulked, and up to standard. Insulation and caulk are way less expensive than frozen or burst pipes.
Clean out your gutters. Prevent snow and ice damage by cleaning out gutters or investing in gutter guards (if feasible).
Properly insulate the attic. Your attic should be well-insulated and well-ventilated. A good gauge? It should be about 10 degrees warmer than outside.
Check for drafts. Gaps around windows and doors run up your heating bill. Something as simple as new weather stripping can be an easy DIY solution.
Service heating system. Service your furnace and chimneys at least once a year to remove buildup and keep them running efficiently.
Prevent slips and falls. Head off accidents by keeping your driveway and sidewalks clear of snow and ice. Sprinkle salt to increase traction and accelerate melting.
Regularly monitor your home’s exterior. Catching damage early will allow you to repair it before it worsens and becomes much more expensive.
It’s that time of year again! With temperatures dropping, families--mine included--are enjoying their first fires of the year.
It’s easy to get lost in the magic of a crackling fire or comforting warmth of a wood stove - and who wouldn’t? But before you kick back and relax, it’s important to take the necessary steps to ensure you and your family can enjoy your indoor fires safely. If you have a fireplace, please have it cleaned before you use it.
Consider these statistics from the U.S. Fire Administration:
In 2018, there were an estimated 379,600 residential building fires causing more than $8 billion in damage and losses.
2,790 civilians died and an additional 11,525 were injured as a result.
Nothing is more comforting than peace-of-mind. Stay safe as you enjoy your fireplace this holiday season
